Having my almonds handy really made me smile. At work, I spent 4 and a half hours on my chair, and they help me not to starve myself... Super silly, but it did made me smile...

Many many many smiles today! One of my first smiles of the day was because of my new snack. My yogurt was getting boring so I decided to buy this Honey Bunches of Oats Granola.  The idea is that I will mix it with my yogurt in the morning. Today, I had 1/4 of a cup with my yogurt (which is half of a portion) and loved it!

I know, I know, lots of posts about exercising... but let's be real, I neglected myself for so many years that it just makes me so happy to have taken this step to improve my overall health. My girls need a healthy mom and that is what I'm fighting to be!

I owe my biggest smile of the day to a friend of mine that showed me with actions (not just words) how important I am for her. Sadly, I cant take a picture with her to post here, so I will mention something else that made me smile. I was not in the mood of eating anything today, but making my own sauce for my mini "pizzas", made me smile. Really yummy!!

When I started losing weight, one of the things I had to cut down was coffee . Why? Because I don't like black coffee and I need creamer. Anyway, occasionally, I treat myself with some coffee with a low calorie creamer I buy at Amazon. Today was a rainy day, so getting my coffee with my super yummy French Vanilla creamer, made me smile...

Getting a shake with my protein power mixed with a banana and 0% milk (no sugar added) made my day. It also made me smile to be able to share it and bring a smile to somebody else's face...

Today I was feeling under the weather... It hurts all over, and I needed some pampering. I am not really a fan of cooking, but today I decided to get adventurous and here it is the end result: "Mini Pizza a la Anelys".

Took me under 15 minutes to have it ready to eat. It is just whole wheat Pita with tomato sauce (made by me from scratch), mozzarella cheese and turkey ham... It was SUPER yummy!

I have been doing the juices that the nutritionist included on my diet, but there are days like today, that I feel more adventurous and wanted to try something different.

I tried another recipe I found online and I learned that I have to use less celery because it killed the sweetness... The best way to describe the taste is that "it tasted like a sweet juice with a #$%* thing that killed the yummy flavor"... But it was still good!!

Can't wait to try more recipes!

Today I was due for my mid program evaluation at the gym. I was very nervous, but looking forward to see if my hard work has paid off... even if just a little bit.

People say that I look less chubby, but I really can't tell much in the mirror.

Well... According to the measurements and the complete evaluation, I already reached 33% of my goal!!

I cannot put into words how happy it makes me.  I just know that I can't stop... I need more and more!!

Dear Goal... Here I go!!

I have been wanting to get a juicer since the longest. When I discussed my diet with the nutritionist at the gym, I asked her to add some juices and promised her to get it ASAP. I did and I'm sooo happy!!

My idea was to make a juice with whatever fruit and/or vegetable that she included on my diet, that I didn't include in any meals for that day. Plus, the ones she actually wrote as juices.

I got a Hamilton Beach juicer that I found on sale. I was trying it out today and I learned that 32 ounces is A LOT!!!! (read my sarcasm there)... Most of the recipes online are made for that amount, so I will need to make adjustments for the next one. And of course, I didn't drink ALL that!

As part of my goals for weight loss and "health mama journey", I needed to adjust my water intake.

My main problem is not that I don't like to drink water... I actually prefer to drink water over any other liquid.  My actual problem is that I FORGET to drink water. I get thirsty and I simply won't move to get water. Call it laziness or call it craziness, but it takes me a while to actually get up and get water.

According to this calculator, I'm supposed to drink 120 ounces (15 glasses) of water per day. This is based on my weight, activity level and weather. I knew this was an important part of my weight loss journey and I needed to set a plan of action.

While at the grocery store, I saw some extremely inexpensive water bottles and I got an idea. I purchased  4 of these bottles with different colors. Each bottle holds 22 ounces of water. I will fill them out every night, and I needed to have them empty by the end of the day.  That alone was 88 ounces of water.

I was still missing 32 ounces of water. First, I would drink 8 ounces as soon as I'm up in the morning. My trainer recommended this to get my metabolism going.  The other 24 ounces missing, I would drink it sipping water while exercising at the gym.

... in progress!

I started a 12 weeks program at the gym today.  I'm looking forward to see all the changes this WILL bring to every aspect of my life.

The trainer is simply awesome and I have heard lots of great things about him. I'm also very obedient when I get instructions from a person that I feel knows what he is talking about, and I will do my best to follow every single instruction.

Go pain, no gain!

Since Gaby lost her baby fat, she has always been very slim. Her weight has always been in correct proportion with her height.

She has always been a picky eater and food never was a priority for her. She would still eat which is why her weight was always average... not thin, not fat. On the picture from the right, you can see how you looked up to 7 years old.

But then, something changed. Suddenly, she started having an extreme interest in food and she would eat and eat and eat some more. It was refreshing for me to see, and I was very pleased that my very picky eater, it's now eating like there is no tomorrow. Also, as her father and I separated, I though it was normal for her to have some kind of anxiety because of that.

Months went by and I started noticing that she was looking a little chubby. At this moment, I tried to decrease the amount of carbs a little bit, and increase the amount of proteins. Still within a healthy range for her age, but just a bit less. I also cut down the starches and sugars.

My girls have never been sugar crazy and for that reason, I have never been worried about it. For example, they don't eat much ice cream, but if one day I treat them with ice cream, I would let them eat as much as they want. With this being said, if we go out to eat ice cream, Gaby would be allowed to eat, but just a moderate amount.

At this moment, I didn't anticipate what was about to happen. One hour after having a very good lunch, she would ask the maid for more rice. Then, before AND after the mid afternoon snack, she would ask her for one or two sandwiches.  This means that she was having breakfast, snack, lunch, extra lunch (more rice), extra meal (1 or 2 sandwiches), snack, extra meal (1 or 2 sandwiches), dinner, and then milk. I have NO IDEA how she was able to fit all this on her stomach, but she WAS doing that from Monday through Friday (when the maid was home).

For this reason, she gained A LOT but A LOT of weight. Her weight was not in proportion with her height anymore. Trying to understand the reason for that, I asked the maid if she was giving her candies or something like that, and she told me everything. It never occurred to her to mention it before, because for her there was nothing bad with giving food to a "hungry" child.

I was extremely concerned and I sat down with her pediatrician to design a plan of action. We both agree that she was not going to have a "diet to lose weight", but she needed a very healthy menu to get rid of the extra fat while she kept getting taller. The goal was to bring her back to proportion between her weight and her height.

I sat down with Gaby and talked to her like if I was talking to an adult. She is very smart and I knew she was going to understand better this way. I talked to her about diabetes and all the possible diseases. I talked to her how I was also going to work myself on getting fit and that it will be a goal for both of us.

As she still needed many carbs on her diet, I knew it was going to be a long road but SHE DID IT. Here are the changes she made:
- She started eating 3 meals and two snacks only
- She stopped eating "kids cereals", and started eating Honey Bunches of oats instead
- She started using skim milk and whole wheat bread
- She started eating more veggies than carbs.  She was still eating her carbs, but just the right amount. This was not a hard task because she have always eat her veggies. She simply started getting full on them instead of a bunch of rice.
- She would only drink juice with her school snack at mid morning (4 ounces)... then she would drink water at every other moment on a normal day (and lots of it)
- Sweets and sodas were down to almost nothing. She would only eat sweets and drink soda at a party or a special day
- She would play outside for at least 1 hour every day and putting extra effort on her gym class at school

After a year and a half, Gaby is back to complete proportion between her height and weight... not thin, not fat.... and I'm just really proud of her.

Even though I have been keeping up with my new health blog for a few weeks already, I havent properly introduce it... It is called: Feels like recovering the old me!
Photobucket

My first post starts like this: I have been overweight for almost 6 years, and this still doesnt feel like me. My weight gain story started when I got pregnant with my first daughter. Due to liquid retantion I manage to gain 60 pounds during my first pregnancy. I was NEVER able to loose that weight... Two pregnancies later and 2 years after my last pregnancy, Im still in the same position that I was when I gave birth to my first daughter.

As Im a petite person (5'2 3/4... almost 5'3, but not really) and being at the weight I am now is A LOT. For several years I have tried to loose weight with doctors, diets, and exersise, but nothing happens... I have lost 5-10 pounds and gain them again, but nothing REALLY happens...

On this blog I plan to talk about my ups and downs on my weight loss journey, as well as some of the health issues I have been discovering along the way and how Im dealing with them... There will also be some tips of how I have been losing weight, in case I can help one of my readers.

This blog is private, so if you want access to my blog, you can fill out a contact form on my site (this way your email will only be seen by me), or even just leave a comment here...
